What is Couples Counseling?

Couples counseling, also known as couples therapy or relationship counseling, is a specialized form of therapy aimed at improving the dynamics between two individuals in a relationship. This collaborative process involves working with a licensed mental health provider , such as a psychologist,  licensed marriage and family therapist, or other licensed counselor who helps couples identify and address their challenges. In Atlanta, GA, and beyond, couples counseling provides a safe and non-judgmental space where partners can openly discuss their issues and work towards a healthier relationship. Whether you’re dealing with communication breakdowns, trust issues, or other relational difficulties, couples counseling can offer the guidance and support needed to navigate these challenges.

Benefits of Couples Therapy

Research shows that couples therapy is highly effective in enhancing relationships and reducing distress. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Improved Communication and Conflict Resolution Skills: Learn to express your thoughts and feelings more effectively and resolve disagreements without escalating conflicts.

  • Increased Empathy and Understanding: Gain a deeper understanding of your partner’s perspective, fostering greater empathy and connection.

  • Enhanced Intimacy and Emotional Connection: Rebuild the emotional and physical intimacy that may have diminished over time.

  • Better Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills: Develop strategies to tackle issues collaboratively and make decisions that benefit both partners.

  • A Stronger and More Resilient Relationship: Build a foundation of trust and resilience that can withstand future challenges.

What to Expect in Couples Counseling

When you begin couples counseling, it’s natural to have questions about what to expect. Here’s a brief overview:

  • Initial Session: The first session typically involves an introduction to the therapist and an overview of the counseling process. This is a time to share your story and discuss what brought you to therapy.

  • Goal Setting: The therapist will work with you and your partner to identify your goals and the challenges you want to address.

  • Session Structure: Intake sessions often include a mix of individual and joint appointments, allowing both partners to express their thoughts and feelings. Homework assignments may be given to help you practice new skills outside of sessions.

  • Safe and Non-Judgmental Space: The therapist provides a safe and non-judgmental space where you can openly discuss your issues and work towards resolution.

Couples counseling is designed to support both partners in navigating their relationship challenges and building a stronger, healthier connection.

Individual Therapy vs. Couples Counseling

While individual therapy focuses on personal growth and addressing individual issues, couples counseling is specifically designed to tackle relationship challenges. In couples counseling, the therapist works with both partners to identify and resolve their issues, fostering a healthier relationship. Individual therapy, on the other hand, centers on the individual’s personal development and mental health. Both types of therapy can be beneficial, and many therapists offer both individual and couples counseling services. Whether you’re seeking to improve your relationship or address personal concerns, professional help is available to support your journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should we expect during the first session? You’ll meet with a mental health professional who’s trained to hold space for both partners. The session is focused on understanding what brought you in, what you hope to change, and how therapy can help. It’s a no-pressure space for honest sharing and reflection.  Each partner will typically then be scheduled 1 individual session, followed by a 4th follow up joint session to discuss feedback and target areas.

Do you offer virtual couples counseling? Yes! We offer online therapy for couples throughout Atlanta and in over 40 states. Whether you’re in Midtown or miles apart, you can access support from the comfort of your own home.

Do both partners have to attend every session? In most cases, yes — especially for couples sessions. Occasionally, your therapist might recommend a solo session with one partner to gain deeper insight or support individual processing.

What if my partner is hesitant about therapy? Totally normal — and very common. We encourage hesitant partners to join the complimentary consultation. Once they see how neutral, supportive, and respectful our sessions are, many feel more comfortable giving therapy a try.

How long does couples counseling last? It varies. Some couples benefit from 8–12 sessions, while others choose to work together longer-term. Your therapist will collaborate with you to set goals and pace your journey. We offer traditional, weekly, and biweekly couples therapy, as well as multiday intensive therapy packages.  Our free consultation can help you decide which is the best fit for your needs.

Do you accept insurance? We are an out-of-network provider. However, we offer superbills for clients who wish to seek reimbursement through their insurance.
